Okla. Democrat Calls For Investigation Into Gas Prices
0 Comments Ryan Welton on Thursday, July 12, 2007 at 2:56 PM.Right on for state Rep. Mike Shelton, who this afternoon has called for an investigation into possible gas "price-fixing and profiteering."
"Fuel stations are blaming problems at the Coffeyville refinery for the high prices in Oklahoma, but I'm told very little of that refinery's output was distributed in central and southern Oklahoma," said Shelton, D-Oklahoma City. "How can the fuel supply in those areas be affected by the closure of a plant that wasn't a supplier in those markets?"
According to a press release, Shelton urged Oklahoma A.G. Drew Edmondson to conduct a vigorous investigation of pricing practices.
"Oklahoma is setting the pace on the highest gas in the country. The people of Oklahoma need an explanation," Shelton said. "If an investigation finds local sellers have engaged in any kind of price fixing or collusion, there should be serious legal consequences for those sellers."
Anybody who really understands economics can tell you flat-out that there's really no such thing as a truly "free" market. Everything is subject to manipulation, and while the oil market is definitely volatile -- more and more -- I do not buy that every single event affects gas prices as drastically as it has seemed over the past two years.
Shenanigans. Definitely some shenanigans.
