Oklahoma Ties Evident In New TNT Drama

I'm excited for myself because TNT's Saving Grace, which premieres on July 23 at 9 p.m. CDT, looks excellent. Holly Hunter stars as an Oklahoma City detective whose spiral downward culminates in an accident while drunk, which results in a meeting with an angel who dips, which results in hijinks and hilarity, not to mention plenty of Oklahoma stereotypes -- all of which are probably true.
I'm excited for Nancy Miller, a Sooners fan and Bishop McGuinness grad, who discussed the show with one of my colleagues a few months ago. Miller was honest about the possibility that many folks would not like the show, the subject matter or the perception it might create among some people about the Sooner State. However, it is obvious and clear that this woman loves Oklahoma and wanted a reason to come home.
As much as either of these though, I'm excited that Holly Hunter is moving into television. She's among my favorite actors of all time, and not only do I like the situation in which they've surrounded Grace Hanadarko, I love the essence of the morality play -- person who struggles, finds an angel (Leon Rippy), finds faith, struggles, lives hard, works hard, plays hard. I relate to that, personally, a ton, and I suspect others do, too.
Crews were in Oklahoma City the past couple of days at Northeast 63rd Street and Sooner Road shooting. My understanding is that the cast and crew would only shoot once down here but that if the show takes off, Oklahoma City could create some incentives to bring more production to the area.
The key to Grace's legs, in my opinion, will be not the authenticity of Hunter as an Okie or the authenticity of the police work but, rather, the writing. If Miller's crew has written well, I think we'll have a winner. It reminds me quite a bit of Showtime's wonderful two-season show, Dead Like Me. It looks quirky and interesting, and given the Oklahoma element, I'm really pulling for this one.
