West Virginia 48, Oklahoma 28: Let The Embarrassment Begin

By the time this post is seen, we'll be lamenting Oklahoma's fourth-consecutive BCS bowl loss. OK, it's officially over. 48-28.

After the first half, I noted how I couldn't complain too much about Brent Venables' defensive game plan given the absense of Reggie Smith, Lendy Holmes and DeMarcus Granger. However, the second half has been unimaginably bad. Bad schemes. Bad play. Poor adjustments.

The offense has zero urgency. No no-huddle work. Still no creative running.

I've called for Venables to be fired before, but that's not going to happen. But let me tell you this: I am so, so glad this season is over.

Is it that the Sooners have no heart? Is it that they're too buff so as to lack speed? Is it that they're not very bright? What is the problem that Oklahoma can't play well in big, national games like this one?

Sure, you can point to Texas and Oklahoma State and Miami, and all of those. However, with conference foes, familiarity breeds comfortability. We played Miami in Norman, where we have a significant advantage. And barring a significant decrease in talent, I think we'll always play well against those we know and those we play at home.

It's these games -- against West Virginia, against USC, LSU and Boise State -- that I think fall worthy of program judgment. And OU has failed miserably.

So, we can be satisfied with 11-3 every year and Big 12 titles every few seasons, knowing that this program will likely never do better than that given the atmosphere of the program and the overall execution.

Or, we can shake it up. Define it however you will.

I vote for shakin' it up.

Post-game notes: In all fairness, here's where I'll give Oklahoma a lot of credit. Our coaching staff might suck at play calling and scheming and keeping kids from stealing coats (kidding), but aside from that, they're actually class folks.

Earlier this week, when asked about Mountaineers' interim coach Bill Stewart, Bob Stoops said it was about time that interim tag came off, and then Stewart turns around and said that comment meant the world to him. It's frustrating, but all in all Stoops and his bunch are good people.

Of course, I'd rather win the Fiesta Bowl with the great Satan as my head football coach. But that's just me.

But having good people is important, and that's why I go back to the Granger incident. And before that, you can look at Rhett Bomar and J.D. Quinn. These guys kill good teams, but alas, I'm merely rambling right now as if this were an e-mail instead of a blog.

And I say that to note just what a good guy that Bill Stewart seems to be. I hope beyond hope that West Virginia gives him a shot at that job full-time.

And another thing. Oklahoma needs players like Owen Schmitt. Yeah, he broke down and all that after the game was over, talking about how much he loved his state and school and all that -- and you can make fun of it all you'd like -- but he's got heart and guts.

Not saying we lack it, but I sure haven't seen any of it in some time.

Again, glad the season is over. Let no man speaketh its name from here forward, barring off-season news (My prayer: Please, God, let Brent Venables and Kevin Wilson get head coaching gigs.). Now, let's get to basketball.

When Bob has had success the a.d. Joe C. has opened up the checkbook and coughed up the bucks. Maybe Bob should give back a half a mil or so. Maybe then we could hire an innovative defensive coordinator. I am so sick of the soft coverage that we see from this staff. Go against this d with a decently accurate qb and the threat of a running game and they play too far off and then miss the tackles. It is truly embarrassing to not only lose, but to lose in such horrible fashion as has happened the last 3 BCS games. And would someone please tell me the last time that the o-line actually controlled the line in the running game? These backs should be able to be past the line b4 being hit, if not for their speed and toughness our running game would be even more of a joke than it has been this year.
