Top 25 For 2007 - No. 10: "The Pretender" - Foo Fighters

You've stuck with me this long. You might as well stick around for the Top 10 of 2007.

And to kick off the final ten, I present to you what I think is the best band going in rock and roll today: The Foo Fighters. Their 2007 hit "The Pretender" comes in at No. 10 on my annual list.

Without Kurt Cobain's death, perhaps we never would have gotten "Big Me," "Monkey Wrench," "Everlong," "My Hero," "Learn To Fly" and others. However, Ohio native Dave Grohl was probably headed toward stardom one way or the other. Drums were always his second instrument, and he's a guitarist and songwriter at heart.

And thank goodness. Rock and roll has very few bands I'd consider quality at this point, at least on mainstream radio, and two of my favorites are the Foo Fighters and Queens of the Stone Age, with whom Grohl worked in 2002 to help them record Songs for the Deaf.

Furthermore, rock and roll in 2007 has very few bands with a hard edge. Most bands are a little indie, a lot emo and very much geared toward a younger audience, and God bless 'em for it. I like several of them, but the Foo Fighters are in my proverbial rock and roll wheelhouse.
