OK, maybe you have, oh one who seeks out great, obscure music. But this song at No. 11 on my list of the 25 best songs of 2007 is as high as it is solely because of quality. There is no hit factor, no pop culture worthiness, nothing besides its quality.
Let's put it this way: If this had been a big hit or its singer had been in the news a bunch or if it were to have been the singular hit of the Internet this year, I could have tabbed this as a Top 3 song.
But sometimes you hear a song, see a video and not only does the song resonate with you musically and lyrically and stylistically, but so does its singer.
Ladybug Mecca was born Mary Ann Viera, and back in the 1990s, she was part of an innovative, critically loved and successful hip-hop trio called Digable Planets. They were best known for a hit called "Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat)," which was a soft rap hit set to old jazz music and a beat. Ladybug was "chill like dat," for those who remember the song.
But the Planets broke up around 1994 due to creative differences and the death of both of Ladybug's parents, due to unrelated illnesses (credit: Wikipedia). So, more than 11 years later, Ladybug Mecca -- older, wiser and still gorgeous -- embarked on a solo career, releasing an album in 2005.
Sure, her game is still primarily what I'd call rap fusion. It's rap in that, well, she raps, but the music is always some sort of pop-jazz fusion, something totally palatable musically to jazz and adult contemporary audiences.
But she can also sing, and Ladybug Mecca stunned fans with a touching musical tribute to her parents -- Amarina and Walter Viera -- called "You Never Get Over It." What I love so much about this song is that musically it sounds like something out of 1985, its multiple vocal tracks and the simple synth-drums combo.
"You Never Get Over It" got some play on VH1's soul channel, and I don't know that it launched Ladybug Mecca into the next level musically, relative to sales or units or future projects, although I suspect this song and the album from which it came were probably critical faves.
But from the perspective of using music as a self-healing art form, creating work that resonates with others' souls, Ladybug Mecca's minor, minor hit in 2007 was a major, major masterwork and, frankly, it will be a favorite of mine forever.
