When VH1 does its look back at 2007 in, let's say, 15 years, everybody will comment on how this was the year Timbaland became a hit machine.

Whether it's his work with One Republic or his own tunes, including my No. 13 song for 2007 -- "Give It To Me" -- Timbaland became the official beatmaker for this era of pop music.

What made this song work on the radio was his choice of Nelly Furtado and Justin Timberlake to carry it out. They're among the most soulful pop artists in the business, and this song has a backbeat that demands a non-stiff sing it.

But in terms of pop culture, what made this song triply interesting is that it was essentially a battle piece. While I don't really know what in the hell Nelly Furtado was saying (she is dissing Fergie), Timbaland is calling out fellow producer Scott Storch, and Timberlake is dissing Prince.

That is probably the only beef I have with the song.

JT is cool, but -- honest to God's truth -- Timberlake can't sniff Prince's jock. Prince is a legend, and our white boy from Memphis is merely really good.

The pertinent musical praise here though should go to the hitmaker Timbaland. There is relevance in production, and he was simply the best out there in 2007.
