Top 25 For 2007 - No. 9: "What Comes Around Goes Around" - Justin Timberlake

Specifically, those chords are Am, C, G and D. Strike 'em up, and you've got "What Goes Around Comes Around," by Justin Timberlake. With all due respect to the band Jamiroquai and Robin Thicke, JT is by a mile the most soulful white boy since Daryl Hall and before that, probably, since Elvis.
Who knows. I'm probably forgetting somebody, but Timberlake is proof positive that not everything emanating from boy bands is bad. Pop culture speculation is that this tune is about his time with Britney Spears, and if it's the case, then boy does karma speak the truth.
However, musically, the power of this song is in its soul and its melody. When you write a tune with only four chords, chords that do not deviate, you had better come up with a dynamic melody -- and that JT did.
The fact that Scarlett Johannson plays the bad girl in his video makes the song even steamier. Truth is, unlike some of the rest of the songs on this chart, I'm not sure this is a tune with more than a two or three-year shelf life. Heck, three or four of the songs on my Top 10, I think, are classics for life.
However, in the world of great pop music, "What Goes Around ... " is what we'd call tight. Timberlake absolutely got the most out of the least on this track, and its quality is absolutely in its simplicity.
