World Series Of Pop Culture 2: Episode 1
0 Comments Ryan Welton on Sunday, July 15, 2007 at 1:31 PM.VH1's World Series of Pop Culture 2 got started a few weeks ago, and I have finally caught up. There have been four round-of-16 matches so far, and the quarterfinals get started Monday night at 8 CDT. Until then, here is a recap of the first four episodes, complete with my performances on each.
The first matchup of 2007's WSoPC on VH1 pitted the hot mamas from Motherboy (reference to 'Arrested Development') against Fat Guys in Little Coats (reference to 'Tommy Boy'). It also featured the line of the series so far.
On a question regarding a commercial for Enjolie, a commercial featuring the line, "I can bring home the bacon, fry it up in a pan," one of the Fay Guys said that he should be ashamed given that he should know everything about bacon.
It was part of a category called "Jingle All The Way," and I scored five of six on these questions about commercials. I also scored five out of six on the first category, "Let's Play The Feud," which was essentially a gossip category.
One of Motherboy's players had a voice problem that gave her kind of a sexy vibe, and she even looked sort of like Cheryl Hines, who I think is incredibly sexy.
Nevertheless, the first episode of 2007's WSoPC was not all successful for me. I struggled in the category 'Loony Tunes,' and I have realized that song lyrics without melody are virtually unrecognizable to me unless they're ubiquitous.
Also, as expected, I didn't do worth a squat in Scary Movies, getting only two of six questions right. Team Motherboy rolled past Fat Guys In Little Coats three games to one.
In the second match of the first episode, The White Russians (reference to 'The Big Lebowski,' although the Dude called them 'caucasians') faced off against Remo Leen Teen Teen (reference to a bizarre Nicaraguan kids' game in which somebody digs his or her elbows into your back while holding up fingers, refusing to relent until you correctly guess how many fingers).
While The White Russians got swept 3-0 by a team of siblings I think will be very formidable down the road, they did pull off the good answer of the night, remembering Black Mambo as the serpentine name in Kill Bill.
It was part of a category called 'On The Q.T.,' focused on all-things-Tarantino. Even though I'm a big fan of Quentin's work, I only managed to answer two out of six questions correctly.
A category called 'Physical Challenge,' which centered on actors and actresses who went to great physical lengths to prepare for roles did me well. I managed three of six on that one.
However, I dominated 'Pop Hits of the 1980s,' which I thought I would. While I haven't been perfect across the board on this show, this is one category, one game in which I would have dominated.
Speaking of domination, the siblings of Nicaraguan descent moved on to the quarterfinals without losing a game.
So, Remo Leen Teen Teen and Motherboy are headed onward.
