Top 25 For 2007 - No. 8: "Grace Kelly" - Mika

Some folks like depressing music, and others like happy music.

I like 'em both, and often I'm at the extreme end of the spectrum. For example, do you remember the 1980s tune, "What About Me?" by Moving Pictures? Great song. Depressing as hell.

On the other hand, 2007 produced one of the campier, happier pop songs in many-a-year. Mika comes in at No. 7 on my list of the 25 best songs for 2007.

Born in Lebanon and raised in London, Mika is reputed to have up to a five-octave range. But that stuff impresses me none.

While I'm not convinced of his vocal ability (he sounds a bit whiny), I was quite impressed with his stage presence and writing ability. Mind you, he was the fourth of four people listed on the song's credits, which is typically code for "he had the song written for him, and they threw him in there for a courtesy credit."

Not that I wouldn't mind a courtesy credit. Got to get the royalties raked in somehow, right?

But "Grace Kelly" was one of the most pleasant songs of the year, complete with a shout out to Freddie Mercury and a camp video with a child. Truth is, sung by anybody else, "Grace Kelly" might not have been as delightful.

Of course, the tune barely dented the American market, garnering only modest play on radio stations and a No. 57 peak position on the Billboard Hot 100. Months after its initial release, Mika has had no other major success of which I'm aware, and I have serious doubts that he'll be anything but a one-hit wonder.

Nevertheless, this was a major player on YouTube and among Internet people. For cyber slobs like myself, this song was a 2007 phenomenon, and its pop culture worth for the year is pretty high.

It sounds like I might be down on the guy or even the tune, and that couldn't be further than the truth. However, I do suspect that "Grace Kelly" is that track that in 20 years will always come up on trivia games.

"Name the artist who sang the song about a dead American actress ...
