Must Listen: "You Give Me Something" - James Morrison

That's what happened to me in 2007 in the form of British pop-soul singer James Morrison. With a husky, soulful voice that he attributes to a bad case of whooping cough when he was a baby, Morrison struck it big everywhere on Earth except for the United States in 2007 with a tune called "You Give Me Something."
It is a travesty this song wasn't huge in America, and it's frankly an indictment on taste. Then again, it took the States four years to figure out the brilliance of Amy Winehouse, so perhaps there's still a chance.
Not only are Morrison's vocals stellar and stunningly soulful, his arrangement of this song hearkens back to the 1970s with big horns and strings. Truly, I don't know that American singers can get away with this lavishness. It would be deemed too syrupy.
When Morrison appeared on New Zealand Idol's finale to perform this tune, he explained that it's a rather harsh love song, noting that he's singing it to somebody who loves him much more than he loves her but that he's willing to give it a go anyway.
Anyway, there are a few songs that upon first listen, I think, "This is greatness."
And "You Give Me Something" would be one of them. Greatness.
